City of Houston Population Estimates by Age and Sex

Planning and DevelopmentUpdated May 7, 20262 resources

The American Community Survey (ACS) 1-Year and 5‑Year estimates for Houston, TX provides a detailed breakdown of the city’s residents by age, including groups such as under 5, 5–9, up to 85 and over. The ACS 5-Year estimates are based on surveys collected over a five-year period, which produces more reliable statistics for smaller towns and neighborhoods due to a larger sample size.

Use 5-Year Estimates for: Small geographic areas (tracts, block groups, neighborhoods), trend analysis when annual data is unavailable, and/or planning and policy decisions requiring higher reliability.

Use 1-Year Estimates for: Large geographic areas (populations of 65,000 or more), more current data for cities, counties, and states, and/or trend analysis of annual data.
